Challenge for the New Year
John & Marilyn Van Essen
Psalm 37:7 was our theme verse for 2002: Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him.
We heard about the need for regional representatives with Canadian LifeLight Ministries at MissionFest in Toronto in February.
One morning, in her devotions, Marilyn was reading in Nehemiah 8:The Israelites told Ezra, the scribe, to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded for Israel…He read it aloud from daybreak till noon…in the presence of the men, women and others who could understand. And all the people listened attentively. Then the Levites…instructed the people in the Law while the people were standing there. They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read.
In her journal, Marilyn had written, "Very few people read their Bibles and therefore don't obey your Word. It would be good to work for an organization that shares your Word." With much prayer and earnestly asking God to show us His will, we applied for the position, and it was our joy to be accepted as Ontario reps.
Do you know people who need to receive God's Word? Why not consider sharing God's holy and precious Word with at least one neighbour, family member or friend each month in this new year! Try to find new and exciting ways to do this: birthday, anniversary, a new baby, baptism, first communion, graduation, housewarming, wedding, youth event, sympathy, illness, loss of job, and the list goes on.
Chicago taxi driver Milton Bronstein may be the most unusual cabby in the world. The Chrysler Corporation and the American taxi cab industry have named him "Outstanding cab driver of the entire nation." Cabby Bronstein carries an assortment of printed placards in his cab. One of them says, How well do you know your Bible? A passenger may receive a free ride by answering a Bible question correctly. Another placard reads, Believe in God and pray for peace. Free ride to your place of worship.
Do you have a deep hunger to read and meditate on God's Word? May this story challenge all of us:
In France there once lived a poor blind girl who obtained the Gospel of Mark in raised letters and learned to read it with the tips of her fingers. Through constant reading, her fingertips became callused, and her sense of touch diminished, until she could not distinguish the characters. One day she cut the skin from the ends of her fingers to increase their sensitivity, only to destroy it.
She felt that she would now have to give up her beloved Book and, weeping, pressed it to her lips, saying "Farewell, farewell, sweet Word of my heavenly Father!" To her surprise, her lips, more delicate than her fingers, discerned the form of the letters. All night she perused the Word of God, with her lips, and overflowed with joy at this new acquisition. – Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations.
