You will be my witnesses…
…in Pueblo, Mexico
Drugs, Wire, and Bibles
Bruce Day
When my wife and I were approached by Global Ministries (via Grant Memorial Baptist Church) about participating in a missions trip to Pueblo, Mexico, both of us immediately responded, "We are in!"
It was only for one week, leaving on Friday, April 12, and returning April 20. During this time we were planning to hold a medical clinic and a dental clinic, show
the "Jesus" film, and help some missionaries repair their home.
It so happened that I was not able to leave until Monday, April 15, so I ended up travelling alone. I do not speak Spanish, and I was carrying one bag full of prescription drugs, a bag full "of wire" for the missionaries' house, and ten Spanish Bibles from LifeLight Ministries.
Twenty people were praying that I would get through Customs with no problems,
even though I had drugs, wire and Bibles. Not only were my bags not opened or checked, but not once did the metal detector beep when I walked through, even though I had a metal belt buckle, a watch and coins in my pocket!
At the Chicago airport I approached a man and asked him if he spoke Spanish; he said he did. I asked him to help me get a bus ticket to Pueblo when we got to Mexico City. He said he was going to Pueblo as well and he would be happy to help me.
On our first day in Mexico, I had the privilege of leading a man and his wife to the Lord, through an interpreter. The next day we went way up into the mountains to a village of two thousand people. They were planting their fields with oxen and ploughs. Right in the middle of the village was a small hut housing a computer that a Wycliffe translator was using to translate the Bible into their language. We gave out the Bibles we had brought, which were received with joy.
The next day we travelled to a village deep in a valley. There were 1500 people, mostly Christians, living in the middle of the desert, with nothing but a few goats and wild turkeys. They have a beautiful church building, where they worshipped with joy. When the elder prayed, I started to cry, even though I did not understand what he was saying. It was wonderful!
All in all, it was a marvelous trip, and I would do it again in a minute if given the opportunity!

Many See the "Jesus" Video
During spring break a team of thirteen from the Church of the Rock in Winnipeg was sent to Las Aztecas, Mexico. Some of them helped build a home for an older pastor, while others went through the community inviting people to a showing of the "Jesus" video in the evening.
As the week progressed, the attendance at the video showings increased. Many were curious as to why these Canadians were repairing a house in Mexico; others were interested in watching the video.
Many responded to the invitation to accept Christ after the video showings, as well as at a special children's program of skits, songs and object lessons. Those who responded were given a Spanish New Testament. Spanish Bibles were given to church members who did not have their own Bibles. Other Bibles and Spanish materials were left with the local pastors for future use in the community. Thank you to LifeLight Ministries for providing us with these Bibles.

Bananas for Bibles
Virginia Birss
Hundreds of Bibles, New Testaments, Gospels of John , and "Life of Jesus" booklets, many of them from LifeLight Ministries, were donated to Mercy Ships for their recent outreach in Honduras. I volunteered my time with them as a nurse and worked with their land-based health clinic for two weeks in May–probably the most wonderful two weeks of my life!
We prayed with many people and hundreds had the gospel explained to them, About 200 people received the Lord and were connected to local churches. All first-time believers received a Bible, and the children received a "Life of Jesus" booklet. Unfortunately, we didn't have enough Bibles for the many who asked for one, but each one received either a New Testament or a Gospel of John.
One family was so grateful for the Scriptures they received that they came back to give me two bunches of bananas as a thank you gift. Overwhelming! The little boy hung around the clinic for the next three days soaking up the Word. On the last day they brought me a farewell gift–another two bunches
of bananas!
