ALPHA and ESL
Tony Lai

What do you do with the experiences God has given you?

I am a British-born Chinese, a recent immigrant to Canada, with twenty years' experience as a teens Bible class leader in the UK, far too many theological degrees, and a teaching certificate in ESL. What does God want me to do with all this experience and education?

The Church of the Resurrection in East York, Ontario, where I now work, seems to attract many newcomers to Canada. In fact, since I began my ministry here, many Mainland Chinese have come through the

doors of the church, and some have stayed. One couple said theirESL teacher in China had recommended that if they wanted to become acculturated they should go to church.

Last year we decided to invite our ESL speakers to Alpha,* with a group especially geared towards them. God has blessed the discussions with newcomers to Canada who have had little or no contact with Christianity. When the NIrV Bibles arrived from LifelIght Ministries, we had exactly enough to give to the attendees. The English is very understandable for them.

These newcomers want so much to belong and have friends, but they are also curious about the Bible. It is our prayer that they will find a true friend in Jesus. Thank you for providing the Bibles to aid our work.

*Alpha provides a non-threatening, safe setting where people can get answers to their questions about life. The program is free and is usually held in ten weekly sessions. The session starts with a meal or dessert, followed by a video or live presentation and small-group discussion.

One Plants, Another Waters…
Terri Houdayer

Thank you so much for the gift of Bibles you gave to us! It was great to be able to get them into the hands of our Discovery Time kids! At least half of our kids are from unchurched homes. Thanks to your gift, we were able to supply the children in grades 2, 3 and 4 with Bibles. Our goal from now on is to supply our Grade 2 class with Bibles every year. So our grade ones this year will receive their Bibles next year. What a wonderful Christmas gift for the kids! (I look forward to sending you a cheque every year to cover the expenses.)

I struggled with accepting the gift of Bibles because it was such an immense gift and represented a lot of money. As I prayed and read, a verse in 1 Corinthians really made an impression: So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow. The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labour. For we are God's fellow workers….(I Corinthains 3:7-9).

One person passed on the need to someone, another person made a phone call inquiring about the possibility of getting Bibles, someone else gave a donation, and so it goes. Each one had a part: For we are God's fellow workers… Thank you again, and may the Lord bless your work.

Nearly 60,000 Scripture CD-ROMS and more than 10,000 special commemorative Bibles were provided by the American Bible Society for distribution to athletes and sports enthusiasts during the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. The distribution was undertaken through the More Than Gold partnership, made up of churches and Christian organizations.

"Winter Sports" New Testaments, featuring testimonies of many Christian athletes, including Catriona Le May Doan, are available from LifeLight Ministries. The suggested donation is $5.00.

The Way for Cowboys

Roger, a pastor of a small Canadian Sunday School Mission church, sent this report about how they use the Scriptures from LifeLight:

The Scriptures we have used most are the New Testament for truckers and The Way for Cowboys. We have a number of seasonal truckers in our congregation, some of whom have taken those Bibles and handed them out to fellow drivers along the way.

K, a local cowboy, participated in the 2002 Winter Olympics. His brother-in-law is the only known Christian in his family and attends our church. He gave K a copy of The Way for Cowboys as a means of reaching out to his own family, which has seen a fair amount of trial over the last few months.

The curator of the museum also attends our church. At a Western Theme Week, she put out a display of the cowboy Scriptures. All of them were gone before the first day was half over.

On the trip home from Missionfest one of my passengers and I had a wonderful chance to share the gospel with a woman at a service station. We ended up giving her a Bible and showed her the portion in the back which explains how to accept Jesus.

A few days later my wife and I attended the Parent Advisory board meeting for our local elementary school, of which we are a part. I took a Graphic Bible with me and showed it to the principal. As a result, that Bible is now in the school library, on prominent display, and attracts a lot of attention from the students.

"On the most joyful day of the year for Christians the world over, celebrating Easter means looking upward. Upward at the empty cross, the empty tomb, the risen Christ. Upward at the promise of eternal life, of new life, of joy. "
