More Precious Than Gold

My daughter Ashley and I, together with sixteen other members of our church, spent two weeks in El Salvador on a missions trip to help support earthquake victims.

We built two houses, taught Vacation Bible School in Santa Clara and held services in another part of the country. We distributed many Gospels of John and The Story of Jesus booklets (both in Spanish). This was one way we could tell the people about Jesus without a translator. I don’t have words to express how much the people appreciated these gifts.

Mario, our bus driver, was not a Christian. Every morning he picked us up at 5:00 to take us to the school and the building sites. We had daily devotions and a worship time on the bus, and Mario started asking questions about what we were doing. We invited him to attend a supper at the church in Santa Clara. He came, and he had questions about Jesus. Mr. Pineta, who is involved in an outreach ministry, answered his questions, the Lord softened Mario’s heart, and that evening he asked Jesus to change his life. We gave him a Gospel of John, and his smile said it all!

Giving the people God’s Word is like giving them gold. Eternal life is much more precious than gold. Thank you, LifeLight Ministries, for providing us with Spanish Scriptures.

Stolen – Spanish Bibles!

In August a team of twenty-one from our church went on a missions trip to Guatemala, and my life has been forever changed as a result of this experience. I praise God for His promise that those He calls, He also equips.

We are grateful for the Spanish Bibles and other literature from LifeLight Ministries. The bulk of the Spanish Bibles were placed in a bag which was stolen from us at the Guatemala airport. What a surprise the thieves must have had! God has mysterious ways of revealing Himself to people! His Word will bring hope and light to the darkest places. Thank God, some Bibles and all the children's literature were in my bag, which was not stolen!

We spent time at an orphanage that houses more than 500 children, where we worked with the children and helped in the construction of a school. We distributed a lot of the children's literature here.

We also had the opportunity of worshipping with the children at the orphanage, and this experience has left a permanent imprint on my heart. Despite their difficult circumstances, the children worshipped the Lord with all their hearts, with hope and joy. Let the children come to me…. Anyone who doesn't have their kind of faith will never get into the Kingdom of heaven (Mark 10).

Reading with Understanding

My wife, Anne, and I taught in a Low German-speaking community in Mexico where illiteracy is a serious problem. The people have resisted chang and tried to use 100-year-old methods to preserve what was once a rich heritage. As a result, they learned to read the words of the Bible in German, but most of them do not undestand what they read. Because of their proximity to the USA and kinship in Canada, many know almost as much English as German, so we developed an English/ Spanish school.
We became aware of the NIrV Bible translation offered by LifeLight and got a classroom set. Right from the start the students loved the wonderful message and stories, and they could understand what they were reading! Every day, at the beginning of our Bible class, the students raced to hand out the Bibles and shot up their hands to be the first to read.

It was tremendously exciting to observe their interest and eagerness to read and understand the Bible stories. Soon they started asking provocative questions, and it was obvious that the Holy Spirit was getting through to them. By the end of our four-year assignment, almost all of the students indicated that they had a solid hope of eternal life. They asked for Bibles to take home so they could read as much as they wanted. .

Good News for Mexican Workers

The Itzke River Farms, near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, has more than a hundred Mexican workers every year helping them on their vegetable fields. They are good workers and do almost any job on the field – planting, hoeing, harvesting vegetables. So far the farms are hiring only men for the work, so that means these men leave their families in Mexico for about six months. They come to Canada to earn their seven dollars an hour, working from sun-up to sun-down. They are very faithful in sending monthly cheques to their families.

We have occasionally visited them and served them with Spanish services – songs, music and a short message explaining the plan of salvation. Before they go back to their homes in Mexico we have a little farewell party and give each one a Spanish New Testament from LifeLight Ministries. They all seem very happy to receive a copy of God's Word, and we trust this will help to change their lives. Pray for these men!

Faith Comes From Listening

The Bibles we received from LifeLight Ministries have been a great help in bringing the Good News to the Spanish community in Brandon, Manitoba. We have given some to people who don't have a Bible and would like to have one for their personal use so they can be exposed to the light of Jesus Christ and make the most important decision in their lifetime. We have also used them for people who come to visit and want to participate in our services and Bible studies.

This has been a great blessing for us because the Bible is the most important book there is. There have also been decisions made in our church, as a result of people being introduced to the truth of God.

Knowing God reveals Himself to humanity in His Word, we are very happy that there are people interested in making the Bible available to those who do not yet know God. Faith comes from listening to this message of good news – the Good News about Christ (Romans 10:17).

The Bible is the most important tool in any ministry, including our ministry, and we would like to encourage LifeLight Ministries to keep up the good work of blessing others.
