Light for Kids

In Mexico, Christmas is a very happy time. The people celebrate the birth of Jesus in many ways, one of which is called a posada. Posada means "resting place" and refers to Joseph's search for a place to stay when he and Mary reached Bethlehem the night before Jesus was born. Pedro and Maria enjoy going on the posadas more than anything else at Christmas. Every night for nine nights before Christmas, the people of a neighbourhood join together to form a posada. Children at the front carry figures of Mary and Joseph. The group goes from house to house seeking a place to stay—just like Mary and Joseph did. Finally one of the homes lets the group inside. The figures of Mary and Joseph are placed in a special spot. On the last night (Christmas Eve) the figure of Jesus joins the other two figures.

Maybe this is something you would like to try in your neighbourhood (maybe one evening, instead of nine)! You could end the evening with a Christmas party, with music, pinata, games and Christmas goodies — a good way to share the real story of Christmas with others.
